It’s easy to forget the details that help protect both your property and your peace of mind while you’re away. Here’s a quick breakdown of how each of these steps really adds value:
- Shut Off Water & Check Sump Pump – Preventing water damage is huge. A burst pipe can cause serious problems, especially if you’re not home to catch it. Don’t forget to ensure your sump pump is in working order if you’re in a flood-prone.
- Take Photos of Your Lodging and Vehicle Rental – This is crucial! If anything happens—like damage to a rental car or an issue with your lodging—having that photographic at both the beginning and end of use can save you from disputes or extra charges. B
- Invest in Smart Home Devices – Love the idea of using smart cameras, doorbells, lights and locks to monitor your home from wherever you are located! It’s not only about convenience but also safety. Smart devices can be a great deterrent for burglars, especially when you can show your home “active” with lights and sounds.
- Consider a Backup Generator – Power outages can happen at the worst time. With a generator, you won’t have to worry about losing your fridge full of food or having your security system go offline.
- Pause Mail and Package Deliveries – This one’s simple but effective. A pile of packages or an overflowing mailbox can scream “no one’s home” to potential burglars.
- Get Travel Insurance – This is often overlooked but essential, especially if you’re traveling far or internationally. Medical emergencies, cancellations, and lost luggage are just a few things it can cover.
- Enlist Trusted Neighbors or House Sitters – Having someone you trust to check in adds a layer of security. It’s nice to have someone nearby who can spot potential issues before they turn into bigger problems.
- Notify Your Liability Insurance Company – Many don’t realize that being away for an extended period (for more than 30 days) can affect coverage. It’s great to confirm with your insurer to make sure you’re fully protected or if you may need “vacation home coverage” or to ensure your home is covered under “vacancy” or “unoccupied” conditions
- Confirm Your Health Insurance Covers You While Traveling – This is a must for international travel. Medical costs abroad can be much higher, and without coverage, the expenses could be overwhelming.
- Inventory Your Possessions – This one is often overlooked, but in case of theft or damage, you’ll be so glad you took the time to record your belongings; photographic inventories are usually the best.
